Living in Northern Virginia all my life (until recently), some of my Favorite shopping places have been the Merrifield Garden Center’s various locations. http://www.merrifieldgardencenter.com/Home.aspx When I was a young adult starting-out, I ogled everything in the yummy Original location… especially at Christmas Time, when it seems like it is “Santa’s Workshop – South”. I wanted everything I saw to deck-out my humble new home. Later, Merrifield provided Landscaping for my first Farm, near Warrenton and, of course, more space means a bigger Christmas Tree… so, more ornaments and delightful decorations.
So, I was totally delighted when Wanda of Merrifield Garden Centers contacted me and asked me to create a pair of large, 8 foot tall x 4 foot wide cupboards for the Original location that I had loved for decades.
My directions: make them similar but not the same, not too matchy-matchy. Make them rustic, interesting and to look like some old Grandpa made them by hand a long time ago, and use Reclaimed Barnwood!
I USED A REPURPOSED TWIN BED HEAD BOARD FOR ONE OF THEM AND A TRIO OF BIRD HOUSES FOR THE OTHER. RECLAIMED CORBELS FOUND AT THE WINCHESTER RE-STORE, KNOBS AND A CAST IRON CORNICE PIECE FROM HOBBY LOBBY.
ARE YOU GETTING HOW HUMONGOUS THESE THINGS ARE? HERE IS 5’10” BEN, WHO DISMANTLED THE BARN THE WOOD CAME FROM, IN THE PICTURE FOR SCALE!
It’s an absolute honor to know that something of ThistleDowne Cottage creations is now part of such a wonderful, family-owned mainstay of Northern Virginia!
